Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of the rhythmic exercise program on cardiopulmonary function, life satisfaction, and lipid metabolism. Twenty-six elderly participants were divided into the experimental and control groups. The program consisted of 3 sessions/week during 10 weeks, and each session included warming up (10 min), main exercise (40 min), and finishing (10 min). Heart rate, blood pressure and peripheral arterialoxygen saturation were measured to evaluate cardiopulmonary function, while total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL(high density lipoprotein)-cholesterol and LDL(low density lipoprotein)- cholesterol for lipid metabolism. The results were that the experimental group showed significant decrease in heart rate, significant increases in peripheral arterial oxygen saturation and HDL-cholesterol, and significant increase in degree of life satisfaction after the program. But there were no significant differences of LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and total cholesterol between two groups. In conclusion, the rhythmic exercise program in the elderly showed the improvement of physiologic function and favorable effects on life satisfaction and lipid metabolism.
